Fun Fact Time!

On October 1st, 2017, Catalonia, a region of Spain, held a referendum and was voted to become independent. On the 10th, the Catalan leader at that time--Carles Puigdemont--gave a speech declaring the Republic of Catalonia. A few seconds later, he suspended the declaration of independence to negotiate with Spain, leaving the country with a lifespan of a mere 8 seconds.

We could argue for hours if it was an actual country just by declaring it, and what is considered a country, but that's boring. If you think it doesn't count, then the Russian Democratic Federal Republic is the next in line.

The seven tone scale Do - Re - Mi, popularized around the 11th century, originated from the Catholic hymn Ut queant laxis, taking the first syllable from each line.

Ut queant laxis resonáre fibris Mira gestórum fámuli tuórum, Solve pollúti lábii reátum, Sancte Joánnes

In the 17th century, Ut was changed to Do, and Si (replaced in the 19th century in many English-speaking countries with Ti) was added to complete the seven notes.

The labiodental flap [ⱱ] is an IPA symbol added in 2005 because it was found to be present in over 70 African languages. This was the last time the IPA had to add a symbol for research or scientific purposes.
