The seven tone scale Do - Re - Mi, popularized around the 11th century, originated from the Catholic hymn Ut queant laxis, taking the first syllable from each line.

Ut queant laxis resonáre fibris Mira gestórum muli tuórum, Solve pollúti bii reátum, Sancte Joánnes

In the 17th century, Ut was changed to Do, and Si (replaced in the 19th century in many English-speaking countries with Ti) was added to complete the seven notes.
