The deep-fried Mars bar was claimed to be invented at the Haven Chip Bar in 1992 by John Davie, and has become a famous snack in its country of origin, Scotland. In 2012, the shop announced their potiential application for the EU's Protected Food Name Scheme, which would designate their name to the official origins of the recipe. Afterward, Mars's legal team contacted the owner, stating that they would not be able to support their application, since a deep-fried candy bar did not foster the company's mission to "healthy, active lifestyles." They also requested for the bar to inform customers that the food item was not endorsed by Mars, and soon the disclaimer was posted in its menu and location; the bid for protected geographical status was never filed.
