What does it mean for someone to be "cute"?

varies depending on who says it

it's a compliment if used to describe a person

    Beauty and cuteness are subjective.
    • User icon
yeah but what's your standards 😛
    • User icon
Telling me that it is subjective does not really explain what it means.
    • User icon
If it's subjective it doesn't have a foxed meaning
    • User icon
There must be some objectivity to it. Otherwise it could mean literally anything.

And a word that can mean anything, means nothing

I've seen people call the weirdest things cute. I don't think there's any objectivity to it.

Have you considered that they might just be wrong?

Besides, do they really have a different definition of cute, or do they simply think that the lable applies to something unconventional?
    • User icon
There's no wrong definition of cute
    • User icon
So if I said that the definition is just a synonym of ugly, this would be a correct definition?

I'm not talking about people thinking that ugly things are cute, but rather that the very definition means that it looks bad.

I am someone that can find cuteness in the ugly. It really is subjective.
    • User icon
Again, I'm not talking about "cuteness in ugly" because that suggests that cuteness is a separate thing from ugly. I'm talking about the definition of cute being ugly. Refer to the second part of my last comment

Yes, it could be a correct definition.
Some things such as happiness, cuteness, besuty and religion are simply very difficult or impossible to define with words 100% accurately.

That is just plain wrong. Happiness can never mean sadness, and beautiful can never mean ugly.

Two people might have different opinions on whether something is beautiful or ugly, but that is because the application of the word is subjective, not the actual definition.

Two people don't arrive at different conclusions because one person goes "Wow! I love it! it looks so beautiful!" And the other person goes "Wow! I love it! It looks so ugly!" (Because according to you, their personal definition of ugly is used for things that are pleasing to the eye rather than repulsive)

Definitions can't just be interchanged on a whim, that's just how language works.
I don't think that this is hard concept.

You're assuming that it can mean anything. That's wrong. You should look at it like an electronic orbital.
    • User icon
No. I don't think it can mean anything. I am arguing for literally the exact opposite of that
    • User icon
I worded it incorrectly, my bad.
I meant to say that you're assuming I'm saying that it could mean anything. I'm not.
    • User icon
      No problem
      What are you saying then?
    • User icon
That the meaning isn't set in stone but it also can't mean just anything.
    • User icon
What is the most narrowed down definition of cute that you can get?
    • User icon
You look for it, I'm too lazy
    • User icon
You could have just said that originally. It would have saved us a lot of trouble 😭
