i LOVE dialectal differences in the scottish gaelic language!!!
i am currently reading a gaelic novel called âhiortâ, by iain f. macleòid, who comes from the north end of the western isles, however⌠the previous novels i read (the constabal murdo books by aonghas pĂ draig caimbeul) were written by an author from the south end of the western isles, and you can really see all the different words they used
one thing that i noticed today is that the word for â(a) whileâ was written as âtreisâ in hiort, but in constabal murdo, it was âgreisâ, i prefer greis plus its more widely used anyway, but faclair.comâs map implies that âtreisâ is a more southern term, which is interesting considering macleòid came from the north of the gaelic speaking world
another small difference is the word for âawful/horrible/very (awfully)â, macleòid spelt it as âuabhasachâ, while caimbeul spelt it as âuamhasachâ, theyâre both pronounced the same but âuabhasachââs spelling just makes more sense to me, plus i was taught it was uabhasach
