I created an alt to test it but neither the referral count or activation count in settings went up (what is the difference between them?) and also on the settings page on this alt, there was no referral link generator section

  oh yeah, there's a lot of criteria for counting a referred user or activate one
  
  you also need a verified email account to create a referral link

  to clear your cache:
  if you're on a computer: click crtl + shift + f5 or command + shift + f5
  if you're on mobile: there's probably a setting to clear history/cache or something
