Before the widespread adoption of the decimal numeral system, vigesimal systems (base 20) were more commonly used by civilizations. This is because shoes were not as prevalent as they are today and humans were instinctually more inclined to use both fingers and toes to count. There are still traces of this particular tendency in modern cultures. One notable example is the French language with its infamous "quatre-vingt".
