So obviously piracy is pretty cool. It's free stuff after all. But it also comes with a lot of sketchiness.

First: Legal stuff. Piracy is stealing and copyright infringement, and therefore illegal. However, streaming service subscriptions have caused people to reply with "If buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing." You wouldn't steal a car, but you would probably make an exact copy of one if you could. Also if you already own the thing you're pirating, it might be fine? Don't quote me on that though.

Another complication comes from works that are no longer being sold anywhere. For example, obscure NES games nobody's ever heard of that are no longer being produced anymore and only had like 100 copies ever. Is it okay to pirate those if the creator isn't getting money from them anymore? Kind of a legal gray area. People will point to media preservation as a big motive for piracy of this kind.

But wait, there's more! Because piracy is so appealing for consumers who are tired of paying for 5 different subscriptions to watch 5 shows, there are tons of sketchy websites out there with the promise of free stuff, just waiting to pounce on unprotected computers. If you do decide to check out piracy, make sure you have an ad blocker installed.

Also I'm not going to post links to any piracy websites in case that's against Darflen's rules. But I will say this: check Reddit.

Just found out that the music and font in the "You Wouldn't Steal A Car" anti-piracy ad were accidentally stolen to make the ad, which is hilarious to me
